This week in Africa’s crypto landscape, the distributed ledger protocol Lisk has launched a $15M Web3 investment fund aimed at supporting startups in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the LATAM region. With this additional funding, African startups and those in developing economies will gain essential backing and accelerate growth within their regions.
Based in Ghana, the payment platform Hurupay is set to roll out a feature that enables users to trade U.S. stocks using stablecoins. Additionally, they’re introducing an “Earn” function where lenders can gain up to +10% APY. Stablecoins have become a crucial facet of the cryptocurrency market, boasting a market cap exceeding $300Bn, according to Coingecko.
In other update, Luno has been honored with the MyBroadband 2025 award for the best crypto exchange in South Africa. Africa Crypto News: Lisk Launches $15M Fund for Blockchain Startups
Lisk, the Ethereum layer-2 platform aimed at facilitating scalable dapps and attracting developers in emerging markets, has established the EMpower fund to aid distributed ledger startups across Africa, Southeast Asia, and LATAM.
The layer-2 platform is capitalizing on the notion that venture capital and Silicon Valley tend to overlook many startups in developed nations. The EMpower fund will have a total of around $15M, with individual startups being eligible for funding up to $250,000.
Today, the Lisk EMpower Fund goes live — a $15M venture fund backing founders in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

Gideon Greaves, Lisk’s head of investment strategy, remarked that founders in Africa and other developing regions have shown their capacity to create widely adopted products despite limited access to venture capital. He anticipates that these innovators will develop the next wave of unicorns.
The current goal is to discover potential and facilitate its growth. Early funding has already been granted to three startups, including South Africa’s Lov Cash, along with Afrikabal, an agritech initiative.
In the coming decades, population growth in Africa and Asia is set to lead globally. Investing in these startups may prove to be a worthwhile long-term investment, given the anticipated expansion of these markets.

As it broadens its service portfolio, the company is also working closely with regulators. Notably, the payment platform claims to be among the first to provide crypto products aligned with Ghana’s evolving regulations.
In its initial years, Hurupay has primarily centered on international payments. The remittance sector for expatriate Africans is extensive but faces fierce competition.
By enhancing its suite of savings and investment solutions, Hurupay aims to offer users compelling reasons for fully engaging with the platform.
