In simple terms, x402 is an open-source payment network that brings back the long-unused HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code from Web2. This code facilitates instant and automatic payments, perfectly suited for AI agents.

With just a few lines of code, x402 can be integrated into standard HTTP requests without the need for customized APIs, blockchain wallets, or any other intricate blockchain tools.

Coinbase stated that x402 is aimed at the “agentic” future of the internet, where AI agents and machines will dominate, allowing for the instantaneous transfer of value in real time while remaining distributed ledger agnostic.

This capability means that x402 could connect with any distributed database, ideally low-fee networks like BSC, Solana, or ETH layer-2s.

Erik Reppel, the Head of Engineering at CDP, mentioned that the open-source network could “define the next era of the internet; one where value transfers as freely and quickly as information.” Reppel also noted that CDP is “establishing a foundation for an economy operated not just by people but by software—autonomous, intelligent, and always active.”

If payments are crucial, stablecoins align perfectly with x402, enabling affordable payments globally without requiring users to long-term holding volatile native tokens.

Additionally, since x402 will be favored on low-fee, scalable blockchains, the platform will facilitate microtransactions without the necessity for subscriptions.

An analyst on X stated that if x402 gains traction, it will radically alter the “business model of the internet” that web3 relies upon.

He forecasts a future where the open-source network will trigger a swift transition, allowing agents to take control and enable microtransactions to become the “currency of the AI internet.”

In the previous month alone, x402 has executed over 38,000 transactions, marking a 90% increase. Additionally, trading volume has surged nearly 5,000% in the same timeframe, exceeding $50,000.
