Elon Musk Unveils X Chat: Could DEGN1 Private Chat Surpass It?

Nov 1, 2025

Tech visionary Elon Musk is set to introduce a new messaging application named X Chat, aimed at rivaling platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp. The launch is anticipated in the upcoming months.

During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast that aired on Friday, Musk mentioned that his team has completely restructured “the entire messaging stack into what’s known as ‘X Chat.’”

What Sets X Chat Apart From WhatsApp Regarding Data Usage?

He expressed his expectation that the app will launch in “a couple of months.” Musk further noted that the network will be free from any advertising links.

He cited WhatsApp as a service that employs data signals for tailored advertising.

As per Musk, the protocol “understands enough about your messaging to determine which ads to present to you.”

WhatsApp’s parent organization, Meta, states that it is unable to access users’ private conversations.

The company clarifies that messages, voice notes, files, and media are safeguarded by end-to-end encryption grounded in the Signal Protocol.

Nonetheless, some information is not shielded by this encryption. Metadata, including whom users communicate with and the frequency of interactions, is left unencrypted. WhatsApp also does not automatically encrypt backups of chat histories.

On its FAQ section regarding “Does WhatsApp collect or sell your data”, the protocol doesn’t give a definitive answer. It merely mentions partnership with other Meta entities “to enhance, support, and provide each other’s services.”

Musk stated that X Chat intends to circumvent these advertisement-related mechanisms.

What Do We Know About X Chat’s Security and Encryption?

As X prepares for a broader launch, the DEGN1 (dGEN1) team has dedicated the past year to promoting an alternative concept: an Ethereum-centric smartphone focused on on-chain messaging.

This device operates on ethOS and incorporates a system-level crypto wallet, a lightweight client, and a messaging application that can engage with ETH and Layer 2 applications.

Recent updates for developers and promoters discuss messaging established on protocols like XMTP and a privacy-centered configuration linked to the user’s digital wallet identity.

The objective is to allow users to communicate and conduct transactions directly on-chain from their devices, independent of conventional platforms.

A note from late September from Freedom Factory indicated that the team is gearing up for a more extensive rollout of DEGN1, alongside enhancements to its integrated digital wallet tools.

X Chat is marketed as a mainstream messaging tool featuring peer-to-peer encryption and devoid of ads. However, several aspects remain ambiguous.

DEGN1 adopts a different strategy. Its messaging system is connected to a hardware device that associates chats with an on-chain identity and wallet.

This arrangement grants it advanced cryptographic capabilities at the operating system level. The trade-off is significant. DEGN1 caters to a niche web3-savvy audience, whereas X boasts hundreds of millions of users.

Currently, scale favors X as it adheres to its planned timeline. DEGN1 presents greater functionality for users desiring wallet-level control and integrated crypto features directly on the device.

DEGN1 hardware and software have been in circulation since 2024-2025, and are continuously updated with enhancements to wallet and OS, representing a smaller ecosystem.
