Kazakhstan is gearing up to establish a government-operated digital currency reserve, as the National Bank of Kazakhstan has confirmed intentions to set up a national crypto reserve. This fund will likely consist of confiscated digital assets and block rewards operations affiliated with the government.

This announcement was made by the government announcement service Kazinform on June 25, 2025. National Bank Chairman Timur Suleimenov recognized the price swings of the internet and the perils associated with cryptocurrencies. Nonetheless, he maintained that putting the crypto reserve under a centralized institution’s aegis would provide adequate supervision and reduce potential threats.

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev urged for an immediate expansion of the nation’s crypto infrastructure during a government assembly. “The shift toward the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies and other digital assets has emerged within the financial landscape,” President Tokayev stated on January 28, 2025. 

“The advancement of artificial intelligence is becoming a pivotal factor, and competitiveness among leading tech nations is heightening in this domain,” he continued. “In these circumstances, we must devise a clear action plan to tackle the significant challenges of this new era.”
