Most Argentinians Have Doubts About President Milei in Light of $4.6B Libra Crypto Controversy

Mar 27, 2025

An increasing segment of the citizens in Argentina are voicing skepticism towards President Javier Milei due to his purported involvement with the contentious $4.6 billion Libra crypto asset scandal. As per a recent survey by Zuban Córdoba, 57.6% of those surveyed indicated that they no longer have faith in Milei, whereas just 36% confirmed their ongoing price floor. An additional 6.4% expressed uncertainty.

The poll, which encompassed 1,600 individuals and was carried out between March 12 and 14, represents the initial occasion Zuban Córdoba directly assessed public trust in Milei since the scandal emerged.

Milei’s Leadership Disapproval Hits 58% Amid Increasing Public Discontent

The polling organization remarked that discontent with Milei’s governance has been gradually escalating, with disapproval of his overall governmental management climbing from 47.3% in November to 58% in March following the Libra crypto incident.

“Dissatisfaction is rising slowly but surely and appears to hit no ceiling,” the polling agency asserted. “The change in sentiment and evaluation of the administration is solidifying as fresh political disputes surface.”

A different survey by the University of San Andrés, conducted with 1,020 participants from March 11 to 20, revealed that Milei’s approval rating had fallen to 45%. Nevertheless, not all surveys align.

A study by Morning Consult, taking into account the period from February 27 to March 5, indicated that Milei retained a 62.4% approval rating even after the emergence of the Argentina scandal.

The dispute originated from a February 14 post on X (formerly Twitter) in which Milei referenced the Libra (LIBRA) coin. In the aftermath, the token’s trading market cap soared to $4.6 billion before plummeting by 94% within hours.

Since then, Milei has sought to separate himself from the initiative, asserting that he only shared information and did not endorse the crypto token.

Despite intensifying criticism and demands for impeachment from opposition factions, Milei’s political base level base remains mostly intact. Polls suggest that his libertarian party, La Libertad Avanza, continues to lead the race for Argentina’s imminent general election on October 26, commanding 36.7% backing.

Meanwhile, the opposition coalition Unión por la Patria is trailing slightly at 32.5%. Nonetheless, worries about Milei’s management of the economy endure.

Only 43% of Argentinians believe he effectively managed to control inflation, while 63% disapprove of his attempts to secure a new loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Argentine Attorney Requests Global Arrest Warrant For LIBRA Crypto token Co-Inventor

Earlier this month, Argentinian attorney Gregorio Dalbon officially sought an Interpol global arrest warrant for Hayden Davis, the co-inventor of the controversial LIBRA coin.

Dalbon, who is collaborating with prosecutor Eduardo Taiano and judge María Servini, is pursuing an Interpol Red Notice for Davis. The attorney’s request for arrest includes a plea for his extradition to Argentina.

The attorney asserted that Davis’s significant involvement in the development and endorsement of the $LIBRA crypto asset, combined with the transnational aspect of the issue, increases the likelihood that Davis may try to evade justice.
