Polymarket Has Zohran Mamdani Set to Victory in NY Election

Jun 30, 2025

Zohran Mamdani decisively defeated Andrew Cuomo in last week’s Democratic primary, and now, as per Polymarket, he stands as the leading candidate for mayor of New York. At just 33, the Democratic socialist is initiating what may become the city’s most significant political transition in decades, advocating a stance that “billionaires should not exist.”

Mamdani asserts, “No individual should possess that amount of wealth. It’s exceedingly excessive.”

Ever since, there has been a fierce online debate involving amateur economists, Twitter Marxists, and crypto libertarians sharing their perspectives. The central question is: Is it reasonable for anyone to hold a billion dollars?

How Would You Prevent Billionaires From Existing?

Consider this:

  • 1 million seconds equates to 11.5 days
  • 1 billion seconds is about 32 years

The disparity is staggering; it represents an outrageous sum of wealth.

This sentiment reflects the logic of Mamdani’s followers online, who point out that New York’s wealth disparity is the most severe in the country.

Mamdani, along with NY Senator Alexander Ocasio-Cortez, advocates for significant taxation on billionaires, arguing their wealth should be redirected for public benefit.

To rephrase the essence of their movement, taxing billionaires just enough to keep them as millionaires is akin to simply trimming extra frosting off a cake.

Nevertheless, some, including AI Czar David Sachs, contend that wealthy individuals will flee NYC in large numbers, relocating to places like Texas, Florida, Liechtenstein, UAE, Monaco, Buenos Aires, Singapore, or numerous other locations beyond the reach of socialist policies.

Some of the more radical factions within the socialist movement assert that it is a betrayal to abandon the nation with riches accrued from the labor of fellow citizens.

Polymarket: Mamdani Leads Democratic Primary

Despite his defeat, Andrew Cuomo has announced plans to run independently under the “Fight and Deliver Party.” Likewise, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is remaining in the contest as an independent, following a contentious term marked by corruption allegations that the Department of Justice ultimately dismissed.

The Polymarket probabilities indicate Mamdani at 69%, Adams at 19%, and Cuomo at 10%.

Mamdani proclaimed, “Tonight, we made history. I will be your Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City.”

Polymarket’s Varied Success Rate

Regardless of how Mamdani’s vision unfolds, Polymarket previously assigned Cuomo an 80% chance for two months. That quickly changed within 30 minutes of vote counts, elevating Mamdani to 94.6%.

Nate Silver praised the platform for outpacing cable news with accurate predictions. While its early assessments fell short, it captured the critical moment perfectly.

However, it’s essential to highlight that Polymarket has previously been incorrect and could misjudge future pivotal elections.
