Increasing Transactions, Growing Challenges
The reasons are quite apparent.
Whenever data is recorded, it becomes permanent and remains there indefinitely. In Solana, every compressed transaction varies from 100 to 400 bytes. Additionally, every addition results in a state change, such as alterations in crypto token balances or program data.
Consequently, every block in Solana contributes approximately 50 to 100MB of data per epoch, even if it remains vacant due to voting transactions.
With an average throughput of 3,100 TPS, Solana handles about 300M transactions each day, leading to a daily increase of roughly 2TB.
As more users engage with Solana, trading various gaining momentum meme coins, there is an increasing market demand for data storage.
Until recently, retrieving historical data proved challenging as Solana validators lacked built-in data indexing. They were only required to maintain a recent state, typically no older than a week. Furthermore, reliance on Google BigTable meant higher costs due to the system’s sluggishness and lack of filtering.
Moreover, fragmented queries necessitated thousands of RPC calls to compile a wallet’s historical data, making it impossible to perform basic queries such as the total number of swaps conducted in, for example, September 2025.

Helius Offers a Major Solution: Is Solana Now Seamless?
Helius, a provider of infrastructure specializing in RPC nodes, API calls, and data streaming, has announced a significant announcement that simplifies the process of searching historical data on Solana.
To address this critical issue, Helius is introducing a new proprietary RPC method named “getTransactionsForAddress.” This RPC method will operate on a newly designed distributed archival storage backend, eliminating the dependence on Google BigTable for historical queries. Utilizing Helius infrastructure, node operators can now search time-based queries and perform bidirectional sorting.

Helius has indicated that with this RPC, access to historical data is now 1000X quicker with latency reduced by 10x across associated methods, such as getBlock or GetTransaction, for instance. Moreover, diminishing the necessity for thousands of RPC calls enhances efficiency and decreases code complexity.
In a post on X, Mert Mumtaz, Helius’s CEO, stated that this improvement will fundamentally transform Solana as it addresses one of the “largest data/RPC issues that exists.”
