Wintermute Draws Blade on Market: Adieu Mubarak, See You Later Tutorial (TUT)
Wintermute, a crypto asset trading market maker, is shedding meme coins such as Mubarak, Tutorial (TUT), and ACT, while Solana continues to face pressure. Is there potential for the industry to rebound and achieve a $1 trillion crypto market cap?
The crypto asset market is showing signs of stabilization, increasing nearly 0.4% over the past 24 hours, allowing some of the top meme coins to invest in, including Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, to recover from losses and ease after substantial selling in Q1 2025. While this is a positive indicator and could serve as the foundation for a much-anticipated recovery, one analyst on X pointed out that Wintermute, a trading market maker, is actively selling off meme coins, releasing several notable options for purchase in just the past hour.

The analyst highlights that one of the most impacted assets in this sale is the ACT meme coin, which is experiencing a significant drop at the time of writing, losing around 10%, which coincides with the reported Wintermute disposals.
Meme Coins Facing Pressure from Wintermute’s Sell-off
Beyond ACT, the trading market maker has offloaded multiple other coins, predominantly within the extensive BNB Chain ecosystem.
The analyst mentions that the market maker also sold high-profile meme coins like Mubarak and Tutorial, which have been in the spotlight recently. Additionally, BabyDoge was part of the sell-off.
The quick liquidation of these meme coins has intensified pressure on these tokens, potentially limiting gains for other altcoins.
Despite ACT, TUT, and Mubarak meme coins being down at present, the overall meme coin crypto market is on the mend. Over 24 hours, it has increased by 2.8%, leading to a total trading market cap exceeding $52 billion. Notably, top gainers from the past day include Fartcoin and SPX meme coins, which surged by an average of 25%.

Nevertheless, traders should tread carefully.
If Wintermute continues to offload additional meme coins in the upcoming trading hours or days, it might trigger a shift in sentiment, constricting capital flow to meme tokens.
Given that these tokens are highly susceptible to sentiment and overall market excitement, gains can swiftly reverse as panic sets in, perpetuating losses from Q1 2025.
On X, an observer challenged the notion that Wintermute is permanently parting with these tokens. According to their analysis, the trading market maker may simply be exchanging them, seizing arbitrage opportunities.
Considering that crypto trading is largely decentralized, with a multitude of exchanges, there might be chances to vulnerability breach price discrepancies between centralized exchanges where these meme coins are traded and decentralized platforms like PancakeSwap, where trading is immediate.
While this scenario is plausible, no concrete on-chain evidence supports this assertion.
What Lies Ahead for Meme Coins Following Wintermute’s Sale?
Overall, enthusiasm for meme coins is waning as the trading market cools down. This decline in valuation corresponds to the sell-off of several of the top cryptocurrencies available, including Solana. After hitting a peak of $295, SOL/USDT has quickly dropped by more than half to $120 in March 2025.

Falling SOL prices have diverted capital away from the asset and meme coins, prompting traders and investors to adopt a wait-and-see approach before making any financial commitments. Consequently, on-chain activity on Solana has diminished, and revenue, mirroring the SOL/USD price trajectory, has declined from its January 2025 highs.
Even though meme tokens are facing renewed pressure from sell-offs, backing from political figures, including Donald Trump and celebrities, yields a generally uptrend view.
Memecoins are Tokenization of the *INTANGIBLE*.

Last year, an analyst remarked that meme coins are irreplaceable and are set to grow in the coming years, potentially commanding a $1 trillion trading market cap.
